Part-Time Grant Writer / Researcher
Part-Time Grant Writer / Researcher (Independent Contractor)
Remote | Approximately 5–15 hours/week
Seeking a strong writer and researcher to provide part-time grant writing support for a nonprofit client serving youth, families, and the broader community in Maine.
This is a flexible, remote independent contractor position ideal for a graduate student, early-career nonprofit professional, freelance writer, or researcher with excellent writing skills and an interest in nonprofit development and grant writing. Previous foundation or nonprofit grant experience is a plus, but we are also interested in candidates with exceptional research, writing, and project-management skills who are interested in developing additional grant writing experience.
The contractor will work closely with Atlantic Corporation's project management team and the nonprofit client to develop compelling, accurate, and well-researched grant applications.
Responsibilities
- Research and review foundation, corporate, and other nonprofit funding opportunities.
- Review grant guidelines and determine application requirements, deadlines, and information needs.
- Draft grant narratives, letters of inquiry, and application responses using existing organizational materials and information provided by the client.
- Conduct supplemental research when needed to strengthen applications and support statements of need.
- Translate program information, organizational data, and client input into clear and persuasive grant narratives.
- Develop or refine measurable goals, outcomes, project timelines, and budget narratives.
- Work within strict word and character limits while maintaining strong, natural writing.
- Identify gaps or unanswered questions and prepare concise follow-up questions for the client.
- Revise applications based on internal and client feedback.
Maintain organized application materials and meet deadlines.
What We're Looking For
- Excellent professional writing, editing, and research skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow complex application instructions.
- Ability to synthesize information from multiple documents and sources into concise, cohesive narratives.
- Strong organizational and deadline-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and communicate proactively when information or clarification is needed.
- Sound judgment about when additional research or client information is needed rather than making assumptions.
- Experience with nonprofit or foundation grant writing is preferred but not required. Experience in nonprofit management, development, public policy, communications, research, education, youth development, or a related field would also be valuable.
Schedule and Compensation
This is a remote independent contractor position starting at $30/hour. Workload is expected to average approximately 10 hours per week, but hours will fluctuate based on the grant calendar. Some weeks may require only a few hours, while weeks with larger applications or multiple deadlines may require additional availability.
We are seeking someone who can begin in October/early November 2026 and participate in an initial training and transition period. We are particularly interested in finding someone who can become a reliable, ongoing member of the project team rather than completing a single grant assignment.
Because grant deadlines are time-sensitive, candidates should generally be able to respond to project communications during the business week and manage work independently around agreed-upon deadlines.
To apply please submit:
- A brief introduction describing your relevant writing, research, nonprofit, or grant experience.
- A résumé or CV.
- One or two writing samples that demonstrate your ability to write clearly and persuasively. Academic, professional, nonprofit, policy, research, or grant-writing samples are welcome.
- Your general availability during the week and anticipated availability from December 2026 - April 2027.
