Senior Staff Software Engineer, Gusto Agent and Partner Experiences job at Gusto in Denver, CO, San Francisco, CA, New York, NY

Title: Senior Staff Software Engineer, Gusto Agent & Partner Experiences (API) Location: Denver, CO - Hybrid; New York, NY - Hybrid; San Francisco, CA - Hybrid Job Description: About Gusto At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff — payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR — so owners can focus on their craft and their customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we support more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide and are building a workplace that reflects the people we serve. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) — because everyone who helps build Gusto should share in its success. Offer amounts are determined by role, level, and location. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy. AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process. About the Role: As a Senior Staff Software Engineer on the Agent & Partner Experiences team, you'll be a key technical leader responsible for influencing the team and broader organization as we build and scale our platform. You'll do this through a combination of hands-on development in our complex Ruby on Rails codebase and guiding others to deliver a high quality platform experience. You’ll sit at the bridge between our API and AI world - turning a payroll platform built for developers into one that agents can reason about and act through.  About the Team: Gusto Agent & Partner Experiences is a platform that allows developers to embed payroll directly into their own software using our APIs and allows AI agents to act on payroll on a customer’s behalf. We've taken Gusto’s robust payroll infrastructure and made it available beyond Gusto itself - to third party developers and to the agents acting on their customers’ behalf. Our vision is to enable anyone to build the best payroll product for their end customers - powering payroll for small and medium businesses across a variety of industries, from vertical SaaS to fintech and neobanks to AI-native products. Learn more about Gusto Agent & Partner Experiences here. Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day: Identify and solve high-impact problems involving technical and organizational complexity that requires understanding and coordination across multiple domains. Design the API contracts and agent facing tools our partners and AI agents build on, including what a good interface looks like when the caller is an agent model. Engage directly with our developer-customers and internal agent partner to deliver a remarkable payroll product. Ship code. Clean, tested, and performant. Level up the craft of software engineering across the organization by providing technical guidance and mentoring. Inform and maintain best practices for reliability and observability for the team. Troubleshoot and resolve production issues. Here’s what we're looking for: Experience: 12+ years of professional software development experience. You have been a technical owner for organization-wide engineering initiatives and have played a role in scaling engineering organizations. Technical Expertise: You are a Ruby and Rails expert. You have navigated massive Rails applications, worked with Ruby across multiple codebases, and are comfortable working at multiple layers of abstraction. Platform Thinker: You've designed and built platforms and public-facing APIs, and have a strong understanding of how to build for reliability and performance at scale. Bar Raiser: You've spent time mentoring and raising the technical bar for the entire organization. Others look to you for guidance on how to tackle ambiguous problems and handle competing priorities. Effective Communicator: You think in terms of business priorities and know about how to orient your team around the right technical goals for the business as well as how to convey technical constraints and needs to business leaders. And a few things that would be bonus - genuinely optional: Payroll domain experience: Payroll, tax or fintech experience is a real head start. It’s also learnable, and we’ll teach it. Agent facing tooling: Experience designing interfaces consumed by a model - MCP servers, tool and function definitions or an integration path for AI providers. We care how you think about turning an API into a navigable tool surface. GraphQL at scale: You’ve been a client of GraphQL - writing efficient queries, building the query construction and data mapping layer around them, and reasoning about performance when you don’t own the resolvers. You have enough schema fluency to influence the design of APIs other teams own.  Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $213,000 to $236,000 in Denver & most remote locations, $251,000 to $278,000 in San Francisco, New York and Seattle. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above. At Gusto, we don't use titles the traditional way, as a signal of rank or hierarchy. Instead, our titles describe two things at once — your craft (what you do, e.g. Engineering, Design) and your scope of ownership (what you're accountable for) — which is why you'll see something like "Head of X" instead of a rank word like "Director" that tells you neither. Because of this, the title on this posting may look different from what you'd expect based on the scope and seniority of the role, and from how similar roles are typically titled elsewhere. If you have questions about how this role compares to your current title or level, your recruiter can help translate. Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale. Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.  When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees. Reliable, consistent presence: We expect regular and predictable attendance, whether you're working in-office, hybrid, or fully remote, so that you stay closely connected to your team, customers, and stakeholders in real time and ensure colleagues and customers receive the timely support and responsiveness they deserve. Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto.  Gusto is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate in hiring or any employment decision based on race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or other applicable legally protected characteristic. Gusto considers qualified applicants with criminal histories, consistent with applicable federal, state and local law. Gusto is also committed to providing reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities and disabled veterans in our job application procedures. We want to see our candidates perform to the best of their ability. If you require a medical or religious accommodation at any time throughout your candidate journey, please fill out this form and a member of our team will get in touch with you.

2. HOW DO YOU USE THE DIFFERENT COMMUNICATION TOOLS IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS?

When you're working on a remote team, there's no way to chat in the hallway between meetings or catch up on the latest project during an office carpool. Therefore, virtual communication will be absolutely essential to get your work done...

5. HOW DO YOU PROCESS INFORMATION?

Several years ago, I was working in a team to plan a big event. My supervisor made us all work as a team before the big day. One of our activities has been to find out how each of us processes information...

6. HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE CALENDAR AND THE PROGRAM? WHICH APPLICATIONS / SYSTEM DO YOU USE?

7. HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE FILES, LINKS, AND TABS ON YOUR COMPUTER?

Just like your schedule, how you track files and other information is very important. After all, everything is digital!...

9. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A MEETING AND PREPARE A MEETING? WHAT DO YOU SEE HAPPENING DURING THE MEETING?

Just as communication is essential when working remotely, so is organization. Because you won't have those opportunities in the elevator or a casual conversation in the lunchroom, you should take advantage of the little time you have in a video or phone conference...

10. HOW DO YOU USE TECHNOLOGY ON A DAILY BASIS, IN YOUR WORK AND FOR YOUR PLEASURE?

This is a great question because it shows your comfort level with technology, which is very important for a remote worker because you will be working with technology over time...
