Staff Researcher, Payment Experiences & Pricing

About the position

Etsy is hiring a Staff Product Researcher to lead research across complex, ambiguous, and cross-functional problem spaces. The researcher will build a deep understanding of Etsy’s buyers, sellers, marketplace experience, and the evolving commerce landscape, and use that understanding to influence company strategy and product direction. This hands-on individual contributor will define a research agenda, conduct high-impact research, synthesize insights across teams and data sources, and partner with Product, Design, Analytics, and Engineering on near-term decisions and longer-term investments. The role also helps set research direction, mentors others, and promotes high standards for research quality and impact. It is a full-time role reporting to the Director of Research. The role is part of a mixed-methods research team whose work informs buyer and seller experiences, product decisions, and business strategy. The position is based near Etsy’s Brooklyn office, with team members expected to come in once or twice per week depending on proximity. Remote candidates outside commuting distance may be considered case by case, with occasional office travel expected.

  • Translate research insights into clear perspectives and recommendations that influence strategy, roadmaps, and product decisions.
  • Design and execute foundational and evaluative research using appropriate methods while balancing rigor, speed, and business needs.
  • Combine primary research, behavioral data, market trends, and existing knowledge to understand customers and opportunities.
  • Partner with Product, Design, Engineering, Analytics, and other teams to center customer understanding in decision-making.
  • Identify patterns across teams and problem spaces, synthesize insights, and build a coherent picture of the customer experience.
  • Mentor other researchers and contribute to a culture of high-quality, forward-thinking research.

Requirements

  • Deep expertise across research methods and a track record of leading complex, ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Strong research judgment, including knowing when to prioritize rigor, when to move quickly, and how to design research around the decision at hand.
  • Ability to develop a research agenda by identifying and sequencing the highest-impact questions for a problem space.
  • Strong business judgment, connecting customer needs and behaviors with product strategy, market context, and business priorities.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence senior stakeholders, synthesize complexity, and communicate research as decisions and recommendations.
  • Ability to work hands-on while also shaping broader direction, mentoring others, and elevating research practice.
